MORAVIAN STARS

THE LEGEND OF THE MORAVIAN STAR

One of the first Moravian Stars was made of paper by pupils in Niesky, Germany, about 1850. The star symbolizes Jesus Christ, who came into the world to be the light of men. The many points, arranged in almost global fashion, emphasize that Christ's concern is for all mankind.

At the turn of the century stars were made in white, red and yellow, depending on region. Most Americans prefer white stars, although a magnificent yellow paper star hangs in the Central Church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Moravian stars, symbolizing peace and hope, remain a popular Christmas decoration in both Moravian and non-Moravian communities.
