Fragrance Garden Alternative Selections
A German Iris – Many colorful selections provide displays from late spring to summer. Height varies 12 to 36 inches tall. Useful accent in border. Tolerates periods of drought.
B Purple Coneflower – Excellent cut flower loved by butterflies and goldfinch.
C Fragrant Viburnum – A superb ornamental shrub growing 6 to 8 feet tall, with white, fragrant flowers blooming in mid to late spring. Gardenia-like fragrance. Plants are hardy and easy to grow.
D Jupiter’s Beard – Vigorous, dependable perennial thrives in infertile, alkaline, well-drained soils. Showy clusters of small carmine-red fragrant flowers. late spring to summer. Foliage is blue-green.
E Russian Sage – Shrubby, aromatic, silver-gray sage with pale blue summer flowers. Grows 3 to 5 feet tall. Grows in full sun in a well-drained, not necessarily fertile soil.
F Evening Primrose – Spreading perennial with showy paper-thin flowers in summer. Charming light pink flowers up to 2 inches across are fragrant and blooms open during day.
G Phlox – Sturdy grower to 36 inches. Delightfully fragrant.
H Dianthus – Spring flowers with a clove-like scent. Long bloom.
I Sweet Woodruff – Spreading perennial grows 9 to 12 inches high. Glossy green foliage with white, starry flowers in loose clusters from spring to early summer. Stems, leaves, and flowers sweetly scented.
