Kim’s Veggie Garden 2014 Week 7: Picking Broccoli!
This past week we experienced about 3 days of rain, combined with warm temps. My garden was never so happy! The lettuces and spinach are the verge of being “ready” for picking. I can’t wait to eat a fresh garden salad, top my sandwiches and make smoothies with these.
I’ve been watching my broccoli and noticed this weather helped push it to grow very fast. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the heads were ready to flower little yellow flowers. Naturally I ate the flower and a piece of the broccoli just to know if I could…it was delicious.
To confirm my suspicions that we waited too late to harvest I marched into the house and did a search on YouTube. We found this video, that explained everything…. How to chop off the heads off of broccoli and when:
Based on the recommendation, I got a kitchen steak knife.
Then sawed off the crown at the base and was super careful not to hurt any other part of the plant.
My husband was with me for moral support…cutting up your plants is hard to do! Especially when you’ve never done it before and you fear killing it.
I made sure to leave any little emerging broccoli heads on the stalks so that I’ll have more to harvest.
In addition to the salad, the radishes are looking about ready to be picked. Out of curiosity, I plucked a radish out.
And then I ate it.
Are you harvesting any cool crops???
