Give Food to Those in Need with Our Best Wishes Program
July 31, 2017
Our Best Wishes Program is back for the month of August! Summer is one of the most important times to support our local food banks and charities who need food because this is when donations are depleted. Just look at this article from LNP about donations dipping at a critical time of year for the Lancaster County Council of Churches. In light of the need, we’ve partnered with Lancaster County Council of Churches during this Best Wishes food drive as well as Hempfield Area Food Pantry, The Loft at Millersville, and Arch Street Center.
Who Are These Organizations?
Lancaster County Council of Churches
Founded in 1947 this council of churches has 140 partner congregations that work to support their programs. The Food Hub provides fresh and healthy food to 100 on a daily basis. LCCC also works with dozens of social service agencies to see that clients are referred and are supported. LCCC also partners with over 46 congregations who host Community Meals. Free, hot meals are served on a daily basis to anyone looking for a meal and for companionship. The Community Meals program served over 100,000 meals.
Hempfield Area Food Pantry
The mission of the Hempfield Area Food Pantry (HAFP) is to show the underserved the gracious love of God by feeding the body, mind and soul of its clients with dignity! HAFP began serving residents of the Hempfield School District in 2008. The food pantry provides hunger relief to individuals and families who are unable to afford food and receive inadequate government financial assistance from programs such as the Food Stamp Program.
The Loft at Millersville
The Loft was started in response to the Penn Manor School District social workers needing a readily accessible place to store and receive food for students and their families. These services have expanded services to include anyone who lives within the Penn Manor School District. The Loft provides a place where people can get what they need, give what they can and grow together.
Arch Street Center
Arch Street Center has been a valuable community resource since 1983. Its mission is to support the recovery of adults living with serious mental illness. The Center is open 365 days a year, seven days a week, providing meals a day, and a program that encourages, empowers, and educates individuals living with serious mental illness while providing basic human needs like shelter and food that contribute to giving life meaning and value. There are other places in Lancaster city to find a meal, however there is only one place to go for people to receive integrated services every day. Members get a sense of stability from Arch Street that helps them make better decisions and be more productive members of the community.
