Re-Applying Weed Preventer & Fertilizers

You may have applied weed preventer and fertilizers into your soil about months ago but it’s time to reapply.  The way that Preen weed preventer works is it creates a vapor barrier that prevents weed seeds from germinating, so reapplying now will keep the second generation of weeds out of your gardens.

Fertilizers with Crabgrass Control work very much the same way in that they will prevent crabgrass control up to 4 months and right about now is the time to apply control again to prevent that second generation!

In addition to the timeline, it’s also important to note when and if you have had weeks of heavy rains. This saturates the ground and dilutes your fertilizers and weed preventers. Reapplication will help this.

If the temperature continues to stay above 85 or so, we do not recommend putting down a synthetic lawn fertilizer.  In high temperatures, you take the risk of burning the grass.  For crabgrass control, Preen Lawn Crabgrass Preventer can be applied (no fertilizer just crabgrass control).  It is applied and then watered in.

If you are interested in applying lawn food in high temperatures, we would recommend using an organic product, which is less likely to burn. Espoma makes a wonderful product called Summer Revitalizer.  It would green up the lawn and is environmentally friendly.
